The Morakniv Hook Knife 164 Left-Handed is a purpose-built wood carving knife for left-handed carvers working on spoons, bowls, and cups. Its single-edged 12C27 stainless steel blade with a 13 mm internal hook radius is shaped specifically to run smoothly along the inside of curved surfaces, and the unsharpened spine lets carvers apply controlled push pressure with the right hand while the left drives the cut. Available with or without a Swedish vegetable-tanned leather sheath.

Built for the Curve of the Cut

The Hook Knife 164's 55 mm blade carries a 13 mm internal hook radius, a geometry tuned for hollowing the inside of spoons and bowls rather than general whittling. Improved edge bevels reduce drag as the blade tracks through the wood, so each pull or push cut follows the curve without catching. For left-handed carvers, that geometry is mirrored correctly from the start, removing the awkward compensations that come with adapting a right-handed hook knife.

12C27 Stainless Steel Holds an Edge Through Long Sessions

The blade is Swedish 12C27 stainless steel, a high-hardness alloy with a combination of razor sharpness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. For a carver working outdoors or in damp conditions, corrosion resistance means the blade stays clean and ready between sessions without special storage. The 2.0 mm blade thickness gives enough rigidity for controlled push cuts while keeping the blade light enough for fine detail work.

Oiled Birch Handle Designed for Grip and Balance

The handle is oiled birch wood, shaped ergonomically for comfort during extended carving. At 62 g (2.1 oz) total knife weight and 170 mm overall length, the Hook Knife 164 sits lightly in hand without feeling insubstantial. The balance point keeps fatigue low during the repetitive strokes that spoon and bowl carving demands.

Who This Is For and Isn't

The Hook Knife 164 Left-Handed suits left-handed woodcarvers who hollow spoons, bowls, cups, or detailed relief work. The mirrored blade geometry and unsharpened spine make it equally capable of pull cuts and controlled push cuts, and the corrosion-resistant steel holds up in outdoor carving environments.

This knife is not designed for right-handed use. The blade bevel is mirrored for left-hand cuts and will not perform correctly in a right-handed grip. The leather sheath is available only as a separate variant; the knife-only variant ships without any edge protection.

Common Questions

What makes this hook knife specifically left-handed?

The Hook Knife 164 Left-Handed has a single-edged blade with its bevel ground on the opposite side from right-handed hook knives. The cutting edge is correctly oriented for left-hand pull cuts and for push cuts where the right hand applies pressure to the unsharpened spine, so left-handed carvers work with the blade geometry rather than against it.

What wood carving tasks is the 13 mm hook radius suited for?

The Hook Knife 164's 13 mm internal hook radius is sized for hollowing the inside curves of spoons, bowls, and cups. It also handles detailed relief carving where a tight radius is needed. The hooked blade is purpose-built for concave surfaces and is not a general-purpose whittling or straight-cut knife.

Does the knife come with a sheath?

The Hook Knife 164 Left-Handed is available in two variants: knife only (no sheath included) and with a Swedish vegetable-tanned leather sheath. The leather sheath is made locally from cowhides in the region where the knife is manufactured. Select the preferred variant before adding to cart.

What is the blade patina note about?

Patina on the Hook Knife 164's blade is a normal result of the tempering process used during manufacturing. It does not indicate a defect or affect the blade's cutting performance, edge retention, or corrosion resistance.
