The ICON Stage 3 Suspension System with Tubular UCA is a complete front-and-rear upgrade engineered specifically for 1996–2002 Toyota 4Runner (3rd Gen) trucks, delivering 0–3 inches of front lift via height-adjustable 2.5 VS Series Extended Travel Remote Reservoir Coilovers and 1 inch of rear lift through ICON-engineered coil springs paired with 2.0 VS Series rear shocks. All four corners are tuned together as a matched system, and every shock in the kit is fully rebuildable and re-valveable.
Shipping: ICON parts ship direct from ICON Vehicle Dynamics, mostly by UPS Ground. Lead times vary by part and some items are built to order, so please allow extra time. We email tracking as soon as your order ships.
Matched Front-to-Rear Tuning
Vehicle-specific shock valving on both the front coilovers and the rear 2.0 VS shocks means the damping characteristics are calibrated for the 3rd Gen 4Runner's weight and geometry, not adapted from a generic platform tune. FK Rod End bearings reduce deflection under load, and CNC-machined 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum components keep unsprung weight in check while maintaining the structural rigidity needed for repeated off-road use. The result is a front-to-rear balance that holds up on the highway and stays controlled on broken terrain.
Delta Joint Upper Control Arms
The tubular steel upper control arms use ICON's patented Delta Joint, a high-angle ball joint that combines the articulation range of a uniball with the sealed, greaseable construction of a conventional ball joint. A zinc-plated housing provides a first layer of corrosion resistance, and a grease seal keeps contaminants away from the metal-on-metal bearing surfaces. For a daily-driven 4Runner that also sees trail use, this matters: a standard uniball offers excellent articulation but leaves the bearing exposed to water, mud, and road salt. The Delta Joint addresses that weakness without sacrificing the high-angle capability needed for increased wheel travel.
Adjustability and Long-Term Serviceability
The 2.5 VS Series coilovers are height-adjustable across the full 0–3 inch lift range, so ride height can be dialed in after installation rather than fixed at the factory setting. All shocks in the system are fully serviceable and can be rebuilt or re-valved as the vehicle's use changes (heavier build, different terrain, or worn internals) without replacing the entire unit. A 700 lb/in Expedition coil option is available separately for heavier-equipped vehicles, and a bump stop spacer kit is also available separately to extend the usable thread range.

Who This Is For and Isn't
This system is built for 1996–2002 Toyota 4Runner owners who want a complete, matched front-and-rear suspension upgrade that increases wheel travel, corrects alignment geometry, and supports up to 33-inch tires without fender modification. It suits both daily-driven trucks and vehicles used regularly on dirt roads and off-road trails.
This system requires aftermarket upper control arms and is not compatible with OEM upper control arms (Application Note #18). Remote reservoir mounting brackets may interfere with some aftermarket bumper mounts and windshield washer bottles (Application Note #35). Lift heights stated are for a stock-equipped vehicle; a heavier build may require the separately available 700 lb/in Expedition coil. It does not fit 4Runner model years outside 1996–2002.
Common Questions
Does this Stage 3 system work with OEM wheels and tires?
The ICON Stage 3 system for the 1996–2002 4Runner is confirmed compatible with OEM wheels and tires. For aftermarket fitment, ICON recommends up to a 33 x 11.25-inch tire; larger tires may fit but will require fender trimming or other modifications.
What upper control arms does this system include, and what joint do they use?
The Stage 3 kit includes ICON tubular steel upper control arms fitted with ICON's patented Delta Joint, a high-angle, greaseable, zinc-plated ball joint designed to resist contamination while providing greater articulation than a standard ball joint. These UCAs replace the OEM upper control arms; the system is not designed for use with OEM UCAs.
Can the shocks be rebuilt or retuned after installation?
All shocks in the ICON Stage 3 system are fully serviceable. Both the 2.5 VS Series front coilovers and the 2.0 VS Series rear shocks can be rebuilt or re-valved, allowing the damping to be adjusted for a heavier build or different terrain without replacing the entire shock unit.
Will the remote reservoir brackets clear an aftermarket front bumper?
Remote reservoir mounting brackets on the 1996–2002 4Runner Stage 3 system may interfere with some aftermarket bumper mounts and windshield washer bottles (Application Note #35). Verify clearance before ordering if an aftermarket front bumper is already installed or planned.
Is a heavier-than-stock build supported?
The Stage 3 system's stated lift heights are calibrated for a stock-equipped 1996–2002 4Runner. For heavier-equipped vehicles, a 700 lb/in Expedition coil is available separately. A bump stop spacer kit is also available separately to extend the usable thread range on the coilover.
