The Exotac xREEL is a pocket-sized handline fishing kit machined from aircraft-grade aluminum in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It carries over 50 feet of 15-lb test monofilament, an o-ring-sealed tackle compartment, and a flexible TPE finger strap on a compact spool that fits in a jacket pocket, making it as useful as a survival item as it is for recreational backcountry fishing. It is available in Black, Gunmetal, Blaze Orange, and Olive Drab.

No Rod Required

The xREEL is built around the premise that catching food should not depend on carrying a rod, a reel, or a tackle box. More than 50 feet of 15-lb test monofilament winds around the outside of the spool, enough line for most backcountry fish in most water. To fish it, pay line out by hand, work the bait, and retrieve hand over hand, coiling slack back onto the spool as you go. The technique is different from rod-and-reel fishing and quick to learn, which means the xREEL is genuinely functional on day one rather than a novelty that requires practice to use under pressure.

Waterproof Storage Built In

The o-ring-sealed compartment at the center of the xREEL is large enough for the included tackle plus a few personal lures or jigs. Because the seal is genuinely waterproof, the same compartment doubles as dry storage for fire tinder, medications, or any small item that cannot get wet, a meaningful secondary function when weight and space are limited. A ring of hook-parking holes around the circumference lets you stow the hook safely between casts so it is never loose in a pack or pocket.

Built to the Same Standard as Exotac Fire Tools

The xREEL is machined and finished to the same tolerances as Exotac's fire-starting tools, a standard that is uncommon for a survival fishing kit. The body is aircraft-grade aluminum, it floats if dropped in water, and it is covered by Exotac's lifetime warranty. Optional reelKIT tool inserts (sold separately, part numbers 013020, 013021, and 013022) add fishing, gaff, or hunting tools to the same body without replacing it.

Who This Is For and Isn't

The xREEL suits hikers, backpackers, overlanders, and anyone building a survival or emergency kit who wants a compact, self-contained fishing option that adds minimal weight and bulk. It is equally at home as a recreational handline for backcountry lakes and streams.

The xREEL is a handline kit, not a rod-and-reel system. It does not cast and is not designed for large fish or heavy-cover fishing. The reelKIT tool inserts that expand its capability are sold separately and are not included.

Common Questions

How much line does the xREEL hold?

The Exotac xREEL comes wound with over 50 feet of 15-lb test monofilament, which is enough line for most backcountry fish in most water. The line is included and the kit ships ready to fish.

What tackle is included?

The xREEL ships with 6 hooks, 6 split shot, and 2 floats stored in the o-ring-sealed compartment. There is also room in the compartment for a few personal lures or jigs.

How do you fish it without a rod?

The xREEL is a handline reel: pay line out by hand, work the bait, and retrieve hand over hand, coiling slack back onto the spool as you go to prevent tangles. The TPE finger strap keeps the spool under control throughout.

Is the compartment actually waterproof?

Yes. The xREEL's central compartment is sealed with an o-ring, making it genuinely waterproof. It doubles as dry storage for tinder, medications, or other small items that cannot get wet.

What happens if you drop it in the water?

The xREEL floats, so it is recoverable if dropped in a stream, lake, or river.

Can you add tools to the xREEL?

Optional reelKIT tool inserts (part numbers 013020, 013021, and 013022) add fishing, gaff, or hunting tools to the same xREEL body. The inserts are sold separately and are not included with the xREEL.

Where is the xREEL made?

The Exotac xREEL is machined and finished in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and is covered by Exotac's lifetime warranty.
