The Exotac Estela Fire Kit is a three-layer fire-starting system assembled by survival instructor and author Kevin Estela, combining the FireRod V2 ferrocerium rod, fireSLEEVE waterproof lighter sleeve, MATCHCAP XL waterproof match case with UCO Stormproof Matches, and quickLIGHT tinder into one coordinated kit. Each component addresses a different failure point, so a dead lighter or lost ferro rod does not end your ability to start a fire. The kit is available in multiple color combinations across all three components.

Three Layers of Fire-Starting Redundancy

The Estela Fire Kit is built around the idea that no single fire-starting method is reliable in every condition. The fireSLEEVE keeps a full-size BIC Classic lighter dry and tetherable, giving the fastest path to flame when conditions allow. The FireRod V2 ferrocerium rod takes over in wind or when a lighter runs out of fuel, and its rod is replaceable so the tool does not need to be discarded when the rod wears down. If both are unavailable, the MATCHCAP XL holds UCO Stormproof Matches that relight after submersion in water, backed by an integral red-phosphorus striker sealed inside the cap's o-ring so it stays dry and cannot accidentally ignite the matches during carry.

Carry Together or Disperse

The Estela Fire Kit components can be carried as a single unit in one pouch or spread across a pack, a belt kit, and a knife sheath ferro-loop. High-visibility cordage can tether all three pieces together to reduce the chance of losing any component in the field. The fireSLEEVE provides two separate lashing points for exactly this purpose, and the FireRod V2 is sized to ride in a standard ferro-loop on a knife sheath.

Waterproof Where It Counts

The fireSLEEVE creates a waterproof barrier around a full-size BIC Classic lighter. The MATCHCAP XL is a waterproof match case with an o-ring sealed cap; the integral red-phosphorus striker sits inside the cap rather than on the outside, protecting it from moisture and preventing accidental contact with the matches during storage. UCO Stormproof Matches light in driving rain, heavy wind, and falling snow, and will relight after being submerged. The quickLIGHT tinder is waterproof and designed to catch quickly and burn hot.

Who This Is For and Isn't

The Estela Fire Kit suits campers, overlanders, bushcrafters, and emergency-preparedness planners who want a coordinated, redundant fire-starting system in one kit. The three-component design is well-matched to anyone who carries fire-starting gear across multiple locations on their kit and wants each piece to back up the others.

The fireSLEEVE is sized specifically for a full-size BIC Classic lighter and will not fit other lighter formats. The kit does not include a compass, knife, or other survival tools beyond the fire-starting components listed.

Common Questions

What components are included in the Estela Fire Kit?

The Estela Fire Kit includes the FireRod V2 ferrocerium rod, the fireSLEEVE waterproof lighter sleeve, the MATCHCAP XL waterproof match case with UCO Stormproof Matches, quickLIGHT waterproof tinder, and high-visibility cordage for tethering the components together.

Can the FireRod V2 ferrocerium rod be replaced when it wears out?

Yes. The FireRod V2 is designed with a replaceable ferrocerium rod, so the tool body does not need to be discarded when the rod wears down. Replacement rods are sold separately by Exotac.

What lighter does the fireSLEEVE fit?

The fireSLEEVE in the Estela Fire Kit is sized for a full-size BIC Classic lighter. It creates a waterproof barrier around the lighter and provides two lashing points so the sleeve can be tethered to other kit components with cordage.

Are the UCO Stormproof Matches truly waterproof?

UCO Stormproof Matches, included in the MATCHCAP XL, are designed to light in driving rain, heavy wind, and falling snow, and will relight after being submerged in water. The MATCHCAP XL itself is a waterproof case with an o-ring sealed cap that keeps the matches and the integral striker dry during storage and carry.

Can the kit components be carried separately rather than together?

The Estela Fire Kit is designed to be carried either as a single unit in one pouch or dispersed across a pack, belt kit, and knife sheath. The FireRod V2 fits a standard ferro-loop on a knife sheath, and the included high-visibility cordage can tether all three pieces together when consolidated carry is preferred.
