The 23ZERO Onyx 270 is a freestanding vehicle awning that mounts on the right (passenger) side of your vehicle and sweeps 270 degrees to deliver 110 square feet of wraparound shade. Built around a 6-arm aluminum box-truss system, it sets up solo and includes two mounting brackets with full hardware. The 1680D laminated transit cover, telescoping poles, guy ropes, stakes, and integrated RGB LED light strips are all included in this kit.

Wraparound Coverage That Earns Its Footprint

The Onyx 270's 270-degree arc spans 18.5 feet tip-to-tip, covering the passenger side and both ends of the vehicle in a single deployment. That geometry matters at camp: a cook station, a gear-staging area, and a seating zone can all live under one awning without crowding each other. The 110-square-foot coverage area is large enough to shelter a group while leaving clear sightlines and airflow through the open front.

Two weather-sealed ceiling pass-through openings connect the awning space directly to a rooftop tent above. The triangular rear opening measures 48 inches by 35 inches; the U-shaped center opening measures 36 inches by 32 inches. Both allow movement between the tent and the awning without stepping outside, which matters in rain or cold.

Canvas and Coating Built for Heat and Light

The canopy is 320gsm polycotton honeycomb canvas with a tear-check weave and UV resistance. An LST (Light Suppression Technology) undercoating blocks light transmission and reduces heat penetration, keeping the shade noticeably cooler and darker than uncoated canvas. The extruded aluminum backboard forms a reinforced structural spine that carries the load of the six-arm truss across the mounting footprint rather than concentrating stress at two bracket points.

Lighting Included, No Separate Purchase Required

Four 58-inch dimmable RGB LED light strips are integrated into the awning structure. They run in white, amber, or color modes, support dimming, and connect via a USB-to-lights switch cord included in the kit. An optional phone app adds music-mode functionality and remote dimming control. Integrated power cord routing keeps cables managed along the frame rather than draped across the canopy.

Who This Is For and Isn't

The Onyx 270 Right Side suits overlanders and basecamp travelers who park with the passenger side accessible for cooking, gear staging, or curbside camp layouts, and who want integrated lighting without a separate purchase. The dual RTT pass-throughs make it a natural pairing for a rooftop tent mounted above the passenger side.

This awning mounts on the passenger side only. A separate left-side (driver-side) model exists for that orientation. Peregrine-series wall kits and the Peregrine Weather Extension are not compatible with the Onyx awning; only Onyx-series wall kits work with this product. Confirm your vehicle's roof load rating and rack capacity before installation, as the awning's mounting requirements depend on the rack in use.

Common Questions

Does this awning include the mounting brackets, or are those sold separately?

Bracket Kit 2 (two mounting brackets with a full hardware kit) ships with the Onyx 270 Right Side awning. No separate bracket purchase is needed for this SKU (IB-230AW270OXR-BK2).

Can one person set up the Onyx 270?

The 6-arm aluminum box-truss system is designed to support solo setup in calm conditions. Six telescoping poles (four pre-installed, two additional) adjust from 52.5 to 100 inches, and six guy ropes with stakes are included for stability once the awning is deployed.

What is the difference between the right-side and left-side versions?

The Onyx 270 Right Side mounts on the passenger side of the vehicle and deploys its 270-degree arc toward the curb. A separate left-side (driver-side) model is available for rigs where the driver side is the preferred camp-access orientation. The two versions are not interchangeable.

Are Peregrine wall kits compatible with the Onyx 270?

No. Peregrine-series wall kits and the Peregrine Weather Extension are not compatible with the Onyx 270 awning. Only Onyx-series wall kits are designed to work with this awning. Similarly, Onyx wall kits are not compatible with Peregrine awnings.

How does the LST undercoating affect the shade quality?

23ZERO's Light Suppression Technology (LST) undercoating is applied to the underside of the 320gsm polycotton honeycomb canvas. It blocks light transmission and reduces heat penetration through the canopy, producing cooler and darker shade compared to uncoated canvas of the same weight.

What do the RTT pass-through openings allow?

The Onyx 270 has two weather-sealed ceiling openings that connect the awning space to a rooftop tent mounted above. The triangular rear opening measures 48 by 35 inches and the U-shaped center opening measures 36 by 32 inches, allowing movement between the tent and awning without stepping outside.
